Review: Shining Inheritance/Brilliant Legacy

While the drama is still fresh in my mind, I thought I'd make a short tribute to it here. I've never been as stuck on any drama lately as I have been with Shining Inheritance (2009) and the last one I was really crazy about would have to be My Lovely Samsoon (2006). ^^

Here's the lowdown of the plot: A rich girl, Eun Sung (Han Hyo Joo) comes back from the States to her family: her dad's going bankrupt but keeps it from her and her stepmum (Kim Mi Sook)is a wicked thing, but dotes on her real daughter, Seung Mi (Moon Chae Won). When the father suddenly turns up dead, evil stepmom turns out Eun Sung and her autistic brother out to the streets to fend for themselves and keeps the insurance money for herself and her daughter. Too cliché? Read on.

Eun Sung & Hwan

While trying to pick herself up again, she finds her true friends: Hye Ri and Jun Se (Bae Soo Bin), who both encourage and support her. One day, she loses her brother, and takes in an old granny with memory loss, hoping somewhere out there, someone would do the same for her brother. Granny turns out to be the president of Jin Sung Foods and her bratty grandson, Hwan (Lee Seung Gi), has crossed paths with Eun Sung before (it involves bag switching and an unfortunate looking spy costume). Things turn out to be even more convoluted when oh no, Eun Sung's dad is alive! Seung Mi adores Hwan! And granny wants to change her will?!

Left to right: Seung Mi, Hwan, Eun Sung, Jun Se

Overall, this show has a whole lotta melodrama but still manages to be funny, sweet, inspirational and chock-full of family values. It achieved an over 40% rating in Korea which is monumentally high for a trendy drama. It looks ordinary on the outside but is a hidden gem for drama-lovers, it has everything! The cast was awesome, no one can do b****y like Kim Mi Sook (drama queen) and the Eun Sung/Hwan pairing was cute, Moon Chae Won's outfits were all cute and Bae Soo Bin was wonderful with his soulful looking eyes. The Jin Sung employees were well casted too! (Gotta love that manager dude.) Hwan's mum and Butler Pyo were great together and Jung (Hwan's sister) was as ditzy as ever with her chipmunk voice.

Cute manager dude. ;-)

I'm bummed now that it's over, it means looking for a new one through all the duds. Oddly enough, I wasn't biased against any of the characters prior to watching this because I wasn't really familiar with their work until this drama... Now I love them all! :-)

Rating: 9.5 (Watch! Watch! Watch!)

Funniest Malaysian Names!

I laughed out loud for 10 straight minutes reading this old post at Mr. Badak's website! If you must know, I was searching for the meaning of mulau (crazy in Kadazan) because I wasn't quite sure of the meaning (I'm a poor excuse for a Kadazan), and I stumbled across this. It's not even the post itself (about an unfortunate man named Mulau bin Burit) that was the absolute funniest, it was the commenters! Teachers and government workers come across the funniest names...

Imagine being named...

Lee Je Hoon to Belt Some Notes for Paparotti!

How cute is this piece of news? Everybody's favorite actor gone for military service, Lee Je Hoon, is acting as a gangster who wants to sing! Jang Ho (Lee Je Hoon) has a talented voice, but because of his poor family background, he became a gang member. Nevertheless, Jang Ho still likes to sing and desperately wants to become a singer. He enlists the help of Sang Jin (Han Suk Kyu) who used to be a well regarded performer in Italy, but is now a music teacher at a local high school in a small city. He's not the most passionate of teachers. Kang So Ra plays Sook Hee, a classmate who has a crush on Jang Ho.
This movie is based on the true story of Kim Ho Joong, who first appeared on Korean TV Show, Star King, on July 18, 2009. During the program, Kim Ho Joong surprised people with his vocal abilities and also made people cry because of his back ground story. He grew up as a troubled kid who joined gangs, but because of his grandmother he began to sing in earnest. Stills and the …

Gawky Poses People Do Best Forgotten

Ever seen a pose that you thought looked terrible even though the person doing it is a mega hot fiiiiiine piece of...well, you get my drift. I'm sure if I asked a guy, they would have plenty of other suggestions but here are just three that occurred to me while typing out this post.

1. The Angry Chicken Pose

E.g. Sohee from the Wonder Girls (middle girl) - BTW their new album WONDER WORLD is out! Check it out! :)

I have never seen anyone pull this off and still look attractive. (Also known as The Stomach Ache or Pelvic Thrust)

2. Woman Draped on a Car Pose

No offense to auto babe ladies everywhere, but I can never find this not tacky. It must be difficult to twist yourself in a sultry pose on a heap of metal (something I, a mere mortal, can never hope to achieve) and I'm glad that at least you're being paid for it.

3. Cutesy Asian Poses

There's a whole multitude of these but I'm pretty sure you're familiar with the like. E.g. Peace Sign (I'm totally guilty of this…
