50 Things You Learn from Watching Korean Dramas

This old list never fails to make me laugh and nod in agreement! Partly because I am a lazy blogger and for your amusement, here it is for you to enjoy! Happy new year folks and may you have the time of your life next year! I'm currently enjoying all the year end performances (Gayo Daejun) by all three Korean broadcast stations and I think I've fallen for B2ST! I finally get all the fan fervor over this group.

Now on to it.

1.Men who are hawt and rich fall in love with vulgar, outspoken women.

2.If you are a girl and have a best guy friend, he’s definitely in love with you.

3.Brothers/best friends/schoolmates/enemies always love the same girl.

4.You’re allowed to make U-turns anywhere in Korea. And there’s never traffic (or a single vehicle) on the side you want to turn to.

5.You get to run out of a restaurant without paying the bill. All you have to do is slap someone and storm out in tears.

6.Everyone has cancer.

7.You’ll get a flu/cold/fever after getting caught in the rain for 5 m…

Easy A

Somewhere in the midst of social activity and work, I managed to find time for some movies and my dramas which are next to impossible these days with everybody trying to get me out of the house. Out of the movies, I've watched recently (Bruce Lee, Rapunzel, Red, Tron, Harry Potter 7 Part 1, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Scott Pilgrim), only one managed to knock my socks off this month. Easy A! Seriously, nobody makes movies like this anymore (I think anything with Michael Cera is crap).

I was never interested in watching this because I watched a clip of it where Emma Stone was doing something really silly with a birthday card, and it sorta turned me off. Plus, House Bunny didn't exactly give me a reason to like Emma Stone. As I watched it however, I noticed that it had a pretty good cast in Penn Badgley (blue devil, rawr!), Aly Michalka and Amanda Bynes (she's so good, you wanna hate her). Cam Gigandet was virtually unrecognizable here as the Jesus-loving, chlamydia-infes…

Rainbow Before Rain?

THIS gorgeous sight greeted me when I resurfaced after diving at Pulau Gaya yesterday! It's like a present from the sky! But I think the sky loved me a little too much and sent cold rain and blustering winds before I got out of the water...

I thought rainbows came after showers, not before. @_@

The Rudest Song I've Ever Heard

For your benefit, it's in French. Sounds a lot better that way if you don't understand French. Innocent enough but I can't say I'm a fan of French tectonic music or any tectonic music for that matter. Je Veux Te Voir translates to I Want to See You.

My jaw dropped when I found out what the song was about (dissing some guy named Cuizi from the band TTC in reply to their song, 'Girlfriend') and my first thought was that the person who introduced this song to me is a pervert! (HAHA, Moto!) My French friend laughed so hard when we all realized what the song was about.

Gonna go back to listening to Cee Lo for now. =)

Once Upon a December

There's just something about December.
The trees seem greener,
The water looks clearer,
And overall, the island just seems more ALIVE somehow.
Everyone seems extra joyful and energized too!

Maybe it's nature's way of saying Christmas is almost here... And Advent has already begun! :D

P/S: I can't WAIT to see my sisters again! Currently thoroughly enjoying Secret Garden!^^ This stuff is like crack.

Taking a Peek at Secret Garden

Being the korean-drama-obsessed freak that I am, I've started watching Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won's SBS drama, Secret Garden. Oh how I've missed watching this duo in comedic roles! It's been a long time.

I've only watched the first episode but I can already tell I'm gonna love it because the two main characters are just so unusual, what with Binnie and his sparkly tracksuits and Ha Ji Won as a tough stuntwoman. I'm not thrilled about Yoon Sang Hyun as Oska but he can be rather funny too sometimes, though how am I ever gonna take anyone named Oska seriously, I'd like to know.

At some point in the drama they're gonna swap bodies. Yup, you read that right. SWAP BODIES. I wonder how that's gonna pan out. Gumiho must've started a slew of fantasy-themed dramas or maybe the latest boy wonder movie, Harry Potter 7 Part 1, had everyone in the mood.

I really hope the latest gunfire among the two Koreas won't disrupt the airing of this drama as usual. Or…

Jay Chou kicking ass in The Green Hornet

I'm kinda digging this. Maybe it's the fact that Jay Chou has more face time in this trailer than Rain had in the whole of Speed Racer. Had to laugh at the comment, "Holy crap! It's not Jackie Chan!" Ah, Jay Chou, the most popular Chinese singer during my high school days. Imean, he was MASSIVE way back when. Check out the trailer below:

Stilted English and all, it's good to see he's still around and acting in the same movie as Cameron Diaz and Seth Rogen. I never knew that the Green Hornet was not one, but TWO guys! Well technically, Rogen's character will be the face of the duo but brushing aside technicalities, it's still JAY CHOU. Stinker or not, I'll watch it one way or another for nostalgic reasons.

The Green Hornet will be hitting theaters in January 2011.

Chuck Singing For Real!

Heck, I know this was released a while back but it just came under my radar a few days ago. I know Zachary Levi busted a couple of showtunes on the sitcom Less Than Perfect and he should totally release a solo! 'Cause my heart literally stopped when he sang. :D

The only thing that annoyed me about this song is, you've guessed it-Katherine McPhee. But I guess it was nice of her to do a duet with him. Are you watching Chuck Season 4? Save Chuck!

Stompin' Sabah 2010!

My friend had tickets to go see Stompin' Sabah 2010 at Jesselton Point (organized by Xpax) so my cousin and I tagged along. It was raining like mad that night and it didn't seem to let up even 3 hours later when we finally decided to show (it rains almost every night here these days). Turns out the tickets were VVIP(!) so it was awesome, we got to stand/sit in a tent and eat food sponsored by Imperial Hotel.

The view from the tent with Wicked Aura on the big screen.
I think Ella was the biggest name there but I didn't get to see her perform. Instead I watched performances by Shawn Lee (beatboxing prodigy), a funny guy who seems to be AF6's Toi aaaand a Singaporean band called Wicked Aura. That's as far as we got till we sped off to party elsewhere as it was getting late. It ended at 2am!

My cousin, Didi. Doesn't she look like a doll?
I recognized DJ Jin from at the tent but I wondered whether to approach him for a photo or not but alas, courage failed me. W…

PETS *squeeee*

An introduction to my four adorable doggies (blinded by pet-owner's love)!!! I know they're not of any particular breed, all mongrels, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say!

To make-up for the lack of posts last month, I'm just gonna do a double post today for an extra whammy effect. Cue photospam.

This is Paddy.

He does not like to be photographed.

And this is the QUEEN.

Her name is Patches and she is one smart cookie.

Last but not least are my two midget dogs: Lucky and Coco. Both of them just play all day and act cute in general. Lucky is particularly good at begging very winningly.

I have just four at present, my dad shudders at the thought of having another dog but I am content. For now. ;-)

The 30 Day Challenge!

Nope, still no Internet. But when I do get a continuous and reliable connection, I'm gonna try this out! My cousin Adna seems to be doing it at the moment over at her blog and I will wait for another month to start to do the entire thing, simply because it looks like fun! :)

Day 1: Your favourite song
Day 2: Your favourite movie
Day 3: Your favourite television program
Day 4: Your favourite book
Day 5: Your favourite quote
Day 6: Whatever tickles your fancy
Day 7: A photo that makes you happy
Day 8: A photo that makes you angry/sad
Day 9: A photo you took
Day 10: A photo you taken over ten years ago
Day 11: A photo of you taken recently

Just a blurb about this month

My internet at home has been disconnected and until it is reconnected again I won't be updating much or at all this month. So this is a head's up. =___=

This past week has been a crazy haze of dinners, dancing, pinkness and relatives. I'm gonna repeat what my sis gushed about on her blog: I have IRISH cousins!!! How cool is that, love their accents to bits! SO SEXI. And my cousin invited me over to Dublin for her birthday in March and I totally want to go! (I wish.) And my li'l cousin, Johanna, whispered to me that they're Irish so they give you gold! HAHHAHAHAHHAAHAHHA! She thinks they're leprechauns or something. Sweet child.

Anyway, the dancing was crazy, never knew how difficult it was to dance in heels wtf, really need dancing classes to help me on that score (if I can get over dancing with a man with a nicer butt than mine). Probably gonna upload the dinner and wedding pics (my cousin Mary Joan got hitched last wednesday! Whoop whoop!) when I get reconnect…

Katy Perry's Peacock

Katy Perry has released a new single off her brand new album, 'Teenage Dream' and it sure is a feisty one. True to her 'I Kissed A Girl' days, the song, 'Peacock' is just as appalling but you get used it after a few listens. Though it really makes me wonder if it will ever hit the airwaves since everyone knows what kind of architecture Katy's admiring. :D

I was kind of grossed out by this video the first time I watched it. But the song sort of grew on me. And I had the brilliant idea of using it as my ringtone today at work... Not the brightest idea in the world since my phone rang in the middle of the office. FML.

Of Ultimate Frisbee and Ruling an Empire

Lately, I've been busy. So busy in fact, that blogging and my social life is wearing down thin. I'm trying to strike the perfect balance so that my already almost non-existent social life won't be extinguished completely.

What I've been doing this last week:

Ultimate Frisbee
This game of pain will make all you couch potatoes huff and puff on the field like me. And I haven't ran so much since I ran for Boeing house in high school. But I have the perfect excuse to cry off from playing Ultimate Frisbee tomorrow. And yes, I have only recently been introduced to this sport.

It's not as easy as you think. Catching those little swirling plates of evil can be quite tricky to grasp and the game involves a lot of running from one side of the field to another. Being the clumsy fool I am, I fell down THREE times and bumped into TWO people at the same time, head-on. Mortifying. But the people ARE nice, so I might join them again another day. (Am I being too optimistic?)

Hoping for an Oktoberfest

I'm so happy to say that...I love my job. I'm always fearful of being one of those people who moan at the end of the day, "Gawwwwwd, I hate my job!" and I can now breathe a sigh of relief that I'm spared from being a pale office robot...for now.

Based on my own personal ethics, yeah, I won't be blogging about friends, relatives or workmates coz all that creates the kind of shiz I'm eager to avoid. I've seen other bloggers do the same and they've been through the whole shebang and learnt from it.

Interesting site of note:! Just how awesome is it to see how people embarrass themselves or showcase their wittiness on Facebook? Kinda like a Facebook failblog. My sis introduced me to this delightful little crumpet.

Weekend off this week, spectacular news! This is RARE. And it's the first day of the month! I think the monsoon may be starting soon, sea's getting a little more choppier and lightning storms abound almost every eve…

Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury! *squeal*

Love this EPIC bit of casting!! Queen just has so amazing songs, songs I actually know, I mean, it's not like I was familiar with any of Johnny Cash's songs in Walk the Line. Everyone has always noted the similarity between Queen and Cohen before this.

Freddie Mercury was certainly rather...eclectic in his music videos. Guess I know why Gaga is the way she is. I'm looking forward to the 2011 movie already! But can Cohen really sing? XD

"I am as gay as a daffodil, my dear..."
My school, St. Francis Convent, Kota Kinabalu, used to sing Bohemian Rhapsody every year at choir competitions and I remember listening to them practice almost every frickin' day. They had it down pat and I loved listening to the school choir those days... :)

Besides the Freddie Mercury movie, does this new Korean flick, Psychic, starring Kang Dong-won and Go Soo not look awesome? I liked a lot of Kang's films such as Duelist and Jeon Woochi. Didn't quite finish M however. These art…

From Vanny the Working Girl

Someone I know expressed his disgust at my recent slew of hormonally-charged posts so I've decided to not be quite so fangirly in this one. ;-) But heck, if you don't like it, don't read it...

Sisters have left for KL and I miss them already... Though I do appreciate having my room back all to myself. Saree's depressed already over there (I feel you, girl) and Chynie's, well, looking forward to Christmas I guess. My long lost Uncle Lawrence (my term for rarely-comes-to-Sabah) will be back this week from Canada and I pray I won't be too tired to be pleasant company. :-P

I get an off day per week so if I only seem to be updating my blog once a week, don't be surprised!! It's a good thing I love my job enough to sacrifice my skin and bear through rainy boat rides. (Am down with a cold today... Acchhuuu!) And I must be the only genius in the world to drop a diving weight on my own big toe. It's gotten big and purple. *sob*

Anyway, hopefully my stamina and …

Of Cute Back-up Dancers

What I would give to know this boy's name! Such a cutie! Though I'm probably older since he's a back-up dancer in a 2NE1's Inkigayo stage performance of Go Away. (YG, please let him debut someday! *fingers crossed*) The girls are of course, amazing as usual... Heck, no surprises there.

It's my favourite track off their album To Anyone and I really appreciate how they shook up the choreography a bit. It's really hard to bring something new to the already congested world of Kpop where they move from one concept to another in the space of a few months.

Can't wait for their next performances of Go Away!! Meanwhile, it's hard to get this track out of my head! :D

Thing I Laughed At The Most Today

Zac Efron. With a beard.

I know Leonardo DiCaprio and Shia La Beouf hit it big after going grizzly, but it seems wrong on the pretty-eyed actor.

This little blurb is just an excuse for me to say that I am officially not jobless anymore! I start work this week as a Junior Marine Biologist. Job, I implore you to inspire me.

The Dawn of the Beta Males

I have heard several complaints from my friends about where have all the manly men gone? Well, let me tell you now that in the age of modern technology, sometimes that hunk of muscle might not have the brain to match all that brawn.

Plus, I guess we're all sick of seeing the same type of guy over and over again that these wimpy heroes who are probably best suited as side-kick material in the days of Conan, are grabbing the spotlight and charming their way in dorky fashion to the hearts of females and gay men everywhere.

I have accumulated a few examples below:

Exhibit A

Jay Baruchel has been getting the girl in Sorcerer's Apprentice, Fanboys and She's Out of My League. Anyone jealous yet? He was a physics genius/sorcerer in SA which just proves the nerds are here to rule. It's like the Revenge of the Nerds movies all over again and hotter than ever.

Exhibit B

Here we have the affable Zachary Levi as the hapless secret agent with top secret CIA files installed in his brain a.…

Park Shi Hoo's New Gig in Haru

My first glimpse of Park Shi Hoo again after Prosecutor Princess! *swoon* I swear no other man has ever looked THAT good in a crisp white shirt and apron (I'm biased). Anyway, various sources tell me that 'Haru' will be an omnibus drama to showcase the beauty of South Korea and is sponsored by the Korean Tourism Board. Big Bang is also in this so there's more to look forward to aside the likes of Kim Bum, Yunho, Lee Da Hae and Han Chae Young.

Check the teaser out below:

Park Shi Hoo's next drama will be Queen of Reversals which is the sequel to Queen of Housewives. I watched that drama right through the end and I have no idea why, maybe it was for Oh Ji-Ho's dimples, but all the chatter/back-stabbing was a pain in the neck. Park's character looks like he'll be a second fiddle character (aww!) but I hope he gets to smile a lot because his onscreen presence shines the most in cute parts! He's absolutely no fun when he's all mopey and serious. I wasn…

The Lies That Keep Us Happy

When you were small, sometimes parents like to sugarcoat reality to keep you happy or rather, off their backs for a few more years without being asked the same question over and over again.

Maybe it keeps you in that happy land where your next thought is when am I gonna go to the playground again? Or CAANNDDY! Or let's play Tourguide Barbie and marry her to that legless Ken doll (the only one I ever owned)!

Anyway, this was one of those times...

Me: Mummy, why do I have such a lot of leg hair?? I thought girls weren't supposed to be hairy!

Mum: Don't worry, dear. It will all fall off when you're older.

Me: Really?

Mum: Really.

Me:*skips gaily away*

Moral of the story: Mums can be such good liars.

Little did I know back then that she was probably referring to this:

*insert heavenly music*

Trippy Korean Street Styles

I just found this site I really like. Y'all know how obsessed I am with all things Korean right? Well, this site is like pure heaven!

Love how they actually show us the street trends in Korea at the moment, from the highschoolers to the working class. Although I doubt very much I would suit a lot of their styles, I love how Koreans look so put together while Japanese people can dress completely wacky.

At the moment it looks like the demure look with frilly dresses, high hemlines, thick strappy heels, sporty/hiphop styles (popular with young people), stockings-and-sneakers, red hair and other styles seem pretty popular at the moment. One style I can't stand is the knee stockings. But they're like Bruce Willis in the Die Hard movies.

I also found this real sweet article on the site too. Kinda made me go awww, but then again, that's just me. A sucker for chick flicks. :DDD

P/S: While we're on that subject, Dear John was awesome (but Channing Tatum??…

I've been wondering why I'm such a crater of empty blog posts this month... Sure, it's mostly because I only got my Internet back recently but I fear a lot of it has to do with acute boredom. I really miss my old and new friends (The Olie gang! Hahahaha...) back in Terengganu... *sigh*

Anyway, I noticed my bangs getting longer and I didn't want to go to a trip to the hairdresser's just for my bangs so I snipped a bit off myself... Lol! (CHEAPSKATE!) I'm trying real hard not to die my hair again because I'm still sticking to my resolution to be dye free by the end of this year. I guess my hair's suffered enough abuse the last couple of years, what with the dying and perming.

Problem is people think I look like a kid now with my current 'do. My youngest sis, Vanna, thinks I look dandy. But I would not place a lot of faith in the opinion of a 13 year old. Ignore the crap behind me. That's the corner of my room where I dump all my what-nots.

Meant to …

What Doesn't Kill You...

Best. Cartoon. Ever.
It's here again. One of those days.

The kind of day where you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, went off to the world and did something you regret (which is so out of character for you). It's unbelievable how many lemons the world can throw at you but we get through it by putting on a brave face because, heck, we all still want to live, right? The S word is for weak-minded people to make room for our densely over-populated planet.

Well, if you can call getting honked at twice in the space of half an hour a bad day. I am just a BAD driver. Sorry to all the angry buggers I cut at roundabouts. I have yet to learn how the most effective way to use a roundabout, which is very inconvenient for me and for you.

As my dad would say, you can't please everyone.

Possible Solutions for a Bad Day

1. Take a nap. Chances are, you're not focusing properly because of a lack of sleep. Some people are superhuman, they can deal with longer waking hours, but they are NO…

K-drama Whirl of Spooniness

Potentially good dramas worth watching this season seem to be My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (Just aired) and Playful Kiss which will be airing this September. Now that I'm back on the Net again, I'm not gonna let this opportunity slip away! I've just realized that I'm quite behind in everything, dropped two dramas because I wanted to watch new ones (I usually get bored in the middle so if I finish a drama, it's either I have plenty of time or the story is what I would call Engaging.)

Anyway, here's a short round-up of my current drama-to-watch list:

Bread, Love and Dreams [KBS]: Epic, just epic. Love all the baking bits, it can be quite funny and Yoon Si Yun is amusing to watch. Touted as a national drama with ratings over 40%, this is much better than East of Eden in vast degrees. The downside is that, boy, do they pile on the drama. Can't help noticing that Ma Jun (the Kang Dong Won clone) walks a little gay (haha!) and I adore Mi Sun to bits (but it looks like…

August Happenings

August 7th, 2010: Let it be known that on this day, Vanessa made her maiden trip to Shenanigan's, KK at the ripe age of 21. I'll be 22 in 21 more days, a minor detail... *sweeps away from mind* My delightful Auntie Nana, bless her merry soul, took me on a night out after the Sabah Rugby annual dinner (whyyy was I there?) at Pan Pac... Crappy camera pic below:

I would have to say that the highlight of the night was when my sis and I got seated with the La Salle secondary school rugby team and they were like, "Sooo, you're both from Konven?" *headslam* But it was fun being called Kakak (older sister) the whole night, puahahahhaha....

After that we went on to Rhumba at Le Meridien Hotel but boy, has it changed since I was last there. It used to be salsa and couples dancing but instead we got kids thumping to ear-splitting beats and dancing girls. So we moved on to Shenny's after an hour. Got introduced to a KK hiphop artist, Atama who's somehow related to me…

Home At Last!

I've been on the low recently especially last week because...

I am now a full-fledged graduate!! *proud*

Even if my degree is the randomest thing ever.

Packing all the belongings accumulated over 3 years nearly sapped my soul away and I ended up tossing a lot of crap away (some of them not even crap at all!) but now I'm comfortably at home with my family and my dogs! =D

It's going to be really hard to blog properly until my Streamyx line at home is reconnected. Being used to being connected at all times, at my share-house and on campus, this is pure and unadulterated torture.

Until then, I shall have to content myself with going online at various wireless hotspots around KK! Gawd I miss this place! ^^ (It rains everyday here.)

I just got back 2 days ago and my old friend, Wongy wants to bring me clubbing at some place called Firefly tomorrow... Should be interesting. I've never really gone clubbing properly in KK before (read: WITHOUT parents). White Room sounds awesome …

Time Traveller: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

I've been waiting for the live-action version of Toki wo Kakeru Shojo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) to be released ever since I learnt Naka Riisa (Yankee-kun to Megane-chan) was starring in it. Based on a 1967 novel about a schoolgirl, Kazuko, who suddenly finds out she can time travel to the past and discovers a secret about someone she thought she knew. This novel has been adapted to films and TV dramas many times.

2010 live-action film trailer:

The 1983 film is supposed to be a classic but I can't find it anywhere so far. A pity though. The 1994 TV drama version stars a very young Uchida Yuki and looks rather cheesy for my liking (idol stars, hmph) and the most well-known version is the 2006 animated adaptation, which is a pseudo-sequel to the original, where the protagonist is Kazuko's niece.

The 2010 live action version (poster above) is supposed to be a direct sequel (about Kazuko's daughter) which is why I'm waiting for it eagerly. Naka Riisa also voiced Ma…

My First Experience as a Promoter

Working as a promoter in Mydin, Terengganu was both fun and painful at the same time. Thank heavens it lasted only 3 days (for the Nippon Paint Roadshow organized by Olie Events) and I'm half glad I'm graduating and will be leaving this place soon because I think I greeted a few hundred people in the space of a few days and encountered a lot of people I knew. I fear being recognized on KT streets as 'that Nippon girl'.

Together with Ah Hau the mascot!! Ain't he cute?!
I was helping out a friend and I've never done promotion work before so it was awkward at first. Working 12 hours a day is no joke. Vanessa is complete rubbish at this, haha! I came back after midnight everyday because usually the team would go out for supper afterwards even though the promoters were usually half dead by then. But the work paid off because we got over 1000 people registered for Nippon freebies! :D

Love my free Nippon tumbler! =D
Being the way that I am around people (read: unsociable)…
